Disaster Facilitation

With recent disasters in Burma and China, I have been thinking again about how facilitators can contribute to the disaster recovery process. Two levels of disasters relief involve the immediate recue operation and the long term recovery process.

I consider succes at the first level to be dependent upon prepartion so that you are implementing what you have prepared for. Though you do not know when/where a disater will strike, you can know that in a particular region that a certain type of disaster is likely to strike. The more you have prepared and practice, the more rapidly you can address the crisis and coordinate the resuce operation.

The second level is where you concenrate on long term recovery. It is so easy for people to be forgotten or for them to become dependent on relief measures. The recovery operation is about helping people to retake tehir responsiblity for their lives and community.

I have been particularly impressed by the work done by the Global Facilitators Service Corps (GFSC).

Up Your Business!

I am off to the Hong Kong International Human Resource Management Annual conference.

They have asked me to be a facilitators for one of the presentors. After some clarification, it became clear that my role is a “moderator” to gather questions from the audience after the speech. It is interesting to see how the term facilitator is being used in many ways, and clarification of its contextual meaning is quite important. Otherwise,

The presentor, Dave Anderson, is the key note speaker and previously ran a automobile dealership. He seems to style himself as an American “Straight Shooter”.

Toastmasters Training Day

Today is Toastmasters Training Day…

I am the sponsor of Shenzhen Toastmasters Club and helped get Toastmasters established in Shenzhen.

At this point we have four clubs operating including Shenzhen Manadarin Toastmasters, New Experience Toastmasters and Philips Toastmasters.

TTD is an introduction to Toastmasters for our new members and officers. And a chance for our more experience members to review what we have learned over the years. It should be an interesting day and we will be providing a report and documentation on the day at the club website.
